Pear Note 3
The latest version(s) of Pear Note (http://www.usefulfruit.com/) released last week. I’ve been a fan of this app ever since @rohdesign told me about it over a year ago.
Pear Note is a note-taking/audio-recording app for Mac OS and iOS. A nicely simple interface, press “Record” and begin typing and you’ll finish with a nice audio-annotated text document of meeting/lecture/conference/table-read notes.
It’s been an invaluable tool for me. As a designer, it’s very helpful to go back to meeting audio and review the context of a particular note. I recommend it to everyone I talk to when discussing my favorite apps. It’s easy to see both students and professionals going to this app often - even the film industry agrees:<br>(http://www.macsparky.com/blog/2012/4/27/home-screens-robert-lloyd-lewis.html) <br>(http://www.usefulfruit.com/blog/2011/05/pear-notes-use-in-film/)
I love being able to do work for products I believe in, so I jumped at the chance when @rohdesign asked if I wanted to design new icons for both the Mac and iOS versions of Pear Note (I was also humbled to have someone as talented as Mike recommend me for the work). It turns out he was deep in working on UI elements for both apps and taking on the icon work was going to be pushing it. Oh yeah, he’s also writing a book (http://rohdesign.com/weblog/2012/3/24/the-sketchnote-handbook-update-1.html) so it seems sleep is more of a luxury for him these days.
I started right away, sketching concepts with pencil in a Moleskine. Scanned those in and started rendering in Photoshop. Three weeks and a flurry of Basecamp discussion threads later, the OS X icon and it’s various required sizes was done. The iOS version followed and, having a good base to work with, we had fun iOS-izing the OS X icon. Speaking of fun, collaborating with Pear Note creator / developer / champion Chad Sellers was outstanding. He clearly cares about getting it right for his users. It’s great to push pixels for a very good product like Pear Note. Go check it out… and dig on that new icon!

I came up with the idea of taking every 100th image in my time-lapse folder and dropping them into Photoshop to create this composite of the moonrise sequence. I may go further in and fine tune each frame but this works as a quick experiment.

A harvest moon rising over the Milwaukee Art Museum on Tuesday, September 13. Shot just under two hours. One second exposures @ f4.5. ISO 800.

Much thanks to Peter Wells who has been showing me the ropes of time-lapse photography. Check out his excellent work here:

USAF Thunderbirds practicing before the Milwaukee Air Show. During practice (the Friday before the air show weekend) you’re allowed out on Government Pier. It’s a great vantage point as planes come really close to flying right over you. Pics by me so, you know, give attribution if you care to use them.

Must. Start. Writing.

Using a photo of my cat to represent my laziness in getting started with writing / blogging. Don’t worry little buddy! We’ll get it going! Thanks to @rohdesign for kicking me in the arse! Onward!
